Urgent Call for Water Conservation: Collective Action Needed to Prevent Crisis

Wanita MCA views with serious concern the recent reliance on cloud seeding to restore water levels at the Bukit Merah Dam in Perak, coupled with alarming reports of multiple dams across the country reaching critical and warning levels.

The fact that artificial rain induction has become necessary reflects deeper systemic challenges in water resource management. With climate change intensifying weather unpredictability and growing demand straining supplies, we call upon all stakeholders - government agencies, industries and Malaysians alike - to treat this issue with the gravity it deserves.

We urge everyone to be mindful of their water usage, especially during this critical period. Simple actions, such as fixing leaks, take shorter showers, using water-efficient appliances, and avoiding unnecessary consumption, can make a significant difference. Additionally, we strongly advise against open burning, which not only worsens air quality but also contributes to environmental degradation, further straining our natural resources.

At the same time, we call upon the authorities to take stricter action against those who engage in open burning or waste water irresponsibly. Enforcement of existing laws, along with public awareness campaigns, could help deter such harmful practices.

Furthermore, we suggest exploring long-term solutions, such as improving water infrastructure, promoting rainwater harvesting, and investing in sustainable land management to reduce reliance on artificial measures like cloud seeding which should remain an emergency measure, not a routine solution.

Let us all work together to protect our environment and ensure that future generations have access to clean, sufficient water. Every small effort counts, and collective action is key to overcoming this challenge.
